Using Gates to Manage Lesson Pacing

Use gates to control lesson pacing, emphasize key points, and address misconceptions before students move forward in an Experience.

Written by Itamar Tabenkin

Most scenes contain a gate that enables you to control the pace. Instructionally, this gives you the time to look over student responses, address misconceptions, or emphasize key points before moving on with the lesson. It also keeps students from running ahead (if you don't want them to.)

Additionally, required responses within a scene provide another way to manage lesson pacing. Students must complete each response element before moving forward, helping ensure meaningful engagement with the content. Use the pink teacher bubbles throughout the Experience to support instruction, emphasize key points, and address misconceptions before students advance.

You need to unlock a gate before students can progress to the next scene. This is done by clicking on the lock icon.

Before unlocking the gate, use the progress dashboard to ensure that all responses in the current scene have been submitted by the students. This helps maintain the integrity of the learning process.

Once you click on it, it will unlock, which means students can advance to the next scene.

Note: Just because you unlock a gate, it does not mean that students will automatically be able to advance to the next scene. Sometimes students are also required to respond to questions in the current scene in order to advance to the next one.

If students are unable to advance even after the gate is unlocked, use the dashboard to check their progress and identify any incomplete tasks.

Gates are also represented in the Dashboard by a red vertical line when locked, and a green line when unlocked.

See this article for more information on how to use the Dashboard.

Troubleshooting Progression Issues

If students encounter barriers to progressing through an experience, consider the following steps:

  1. Check the Teacher Gate

    • Ensure the gate at the end of the current scene is unlocked.

  2. Verify Completion of Required Activities

    • Confirm that all required activities in the scene have been completed and submitted by students.

    • Use the dashboard to monitor progress and identify incomplete tasks.

  3. Guide Students to Complete Activities

    • Communicate with students about the importance of completing and submitting all required responses.

By addressing these areas, you can resolve most progression issues and ensure a smooth learning experience.

Understanding Gates in Self-Paced Mode

In Self-Paced mode, all gates are automatically unlocked, allowing students to move through the Experience independently at their own pace.

When you assign an experience for this mode, check the "Self-paced" box on step 3 of the Assign process. This does two things:

  • It unlocks all the gates immediately so that a student can proceed through the experience completely on their own without you having to unlock each scene manually.

  • It turns on student-facing feedback. This means that any question that is auto-scored will show as correct, incorrect, or partially correct immediately upon student submission.

Benefits of Self-Paced Mode:

  1. Freedom to Explore: All gates within the experience are unlocked instantly. Students are free to navigate the content without waiting for manual unlocks.

  2. Immediate Feedback: Students receive instant feedback on auto-scored questions—correct, incorrect, or partially correct. This helps them gauge their understanding in real time.

  3. Encouraging Autonomy: Self-paced learning nurtures independence. Students take control of their learning journey, fostering a sense of ownership.

  4. Educator Support: While students take charge, educators gain insights into individual progress, enabling targeted support.

  5. Personalized Learning: Students with diverse learning styles benefit from a tailored approach, enhancing both comprehension and skills.
